Japanese Studies Center

History

Chiang Mai University was founded as the first national university located outside Bangkok in 1964. At present 35,672 students study at twenty faculties, a collage and a graduate school. The Faculty of Humanities has been taking significant role in higher education and academic research in the field of humanities and social science in northern Thailand.

In northern Thailand, Japanese language education started at the Faculty of Humanities in 1977. Japanese major course was established in 1987. Since then, the number of Japanese learners has been gradually increasing. Nowadays 11 full-time academic staff teaches 362 students while offering Japanese literature and social studies courses as well as Japanese language courses. Through the educational activities, the Faculty of Humanities established collaborative relationships with Japanese companies and community in Chiang Mai. 

On March 11, 2008, the Faculty of Humanities received "Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects" from the Japanese government and founded Japanese Studies Center in HB6 building of the Faculty of Humanities. The center has been operated since June. Opening ceremony of the center was officially held on November 26, 2008 to celebrate launching the project to propel Japanese studies in northern Thailand and Mekong region, and to promote mutual understanding with Japan. 

Japanese Studies Center established a master’s course of Japanese studies in August, 2013 to provide not only language ability, but only also further knowledge of Japan to produce higher intellectual professionals and academic researchers. In addition, the center promotes establishing intellectual relationships with universities or educational institutions in Thailand and Japan to deepen the exchanges and collaboration among students and faculty.

-February 20, 2016 -Hand-over ceremony of the renovation project for the building of Japanese Studies Center.

-March 2, 2015 -"Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects" signing ceremony for renovation project of Japanese Studies Center with the Japanese government was held.

-August, 2013 -Master’s course of Japanese studies was established.

-March 9, 2011 -His Imperial Highness Prince Akishinonomiya Fumihito visited Japanese Studies Center.

-July 17, 2009 -Northern Thai University Consortium for Japanese Language-Japanese Studies (UCJ) was established.(Japanese Studies Center became a member of the consortium.)

-November 26, 2008 -Opening ceremony of Japanese Studies Center (Official).

-June, 2008 -Japanese Studies Center started operation.

-March 11, 2008 -"Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects" signing ceremony for establishing Japanese Studies Center with the Japanese government was held.

-February 23, 2007 -Committee for establishing Japanese Studies Center was established in the Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University.
